Fenghao Lu's research and travel is inspired by the Taoist philosophy of “in between,” which he has been learning from an early age. As he explains, “Tso” means “The Way” in Chinese and the theory of the in between is based on the thinking model of identifying two poles to critically perceive the real world as a combination of opposites, such as the spatial model between ambiguity and certainty that requires one to pay attention to all of the possibilities of the nature of things. He chose to research Japanese classical forms because they have “a sophisticated concept of the in between, providing a diversity of ambiguity and many opportunities for creativity,” which “differ from the western logic of construction and clear structures.” Ultimately, he believes, the action of design is about seeking a methodology among all variables.
