Greg Williams

Upon receiving the 2004 SOM Foundation fellowship, Greg Williams moved to Vienna, Austria, using the location as a hub for excursions throughout Austria, Hungary, Italy, the Slovak Republic, and Spain. Spanning over six months, his fellowship focused on analyzing a breadth of projects ranging scale, type, and period, from historical works generated during Red Vienna to a spectrum of contemporary projects throughout Europe.

The purpose of this travel study is to investigate the conceptual spatial systems applied in Viennese design processes. Specifically, external forces (site, social, cultural, government) and internal influences (performative, programmatic) will be identified and examined in order to determine how spatial organization impacts the building as a cohesive whole. Of special interest is the creation of dynamic space that is adaptive to the changing needs of a heterogeneous society.

Austria is a society of creation, seamlessly tying tradition and modernity. It is a nation that possesses a highly progressive outlook for design, promoting culturally sensitive innovative architectural solutions and embedding them into daily life and their rich historical surrounding. Architectural firms such as Coop Himmelblau and Delugan Meissl Associated Architects articulate an inventive philosophy of design mindful of the complexity of the forces that come to bear on the outcome of cohesive spaces.
