2018 UK Award Part 1
Negotiation of States: A Crematorium and Columbarium in Hong Kong

Traditional death rituals have become unsustainable in Hong Kong, where space is scarce. Grey Grierson’s project constructs a funerary system that forms additional space for local residents rather than subtracting it.

“Negotiation of States” proposes a crematorium and columbarium within Hong Kong that is formed from a new funerary system. The system responds to the lack of space to house the dead within the city, manipulating existing digital technologies and land reclamation methodologies to formulate a new form of ancestral experience. Each death contributes to the landscape that emerges from a sunken void toward the horizon.
