The SOM Foundation traveling fellowship experience was a truly transformational opportunity for me, though it took months to adjust from nearly eight solid years living in architecture studios to the globetrotting, overwhelmingly stimulating lifestyle of the traveling fellow. But it is now over thirty years later, and I still often think about the things I saw and did on that journey, and how much it brought me not just as an architect but as a human being. I am very happy to see the award continues to be granted to the future generation.
Julianna Fecskés Phillips
Harvard University
received her Master of Architecture degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design before completing her travels for the SOM Foundation fellowship. She then worked in the office of Frank Gehry, and for several years at Behnisch + Partner in Stuttgart, Germany. Upon returning to the US in the mid-90s, Fecskés Phillips pursued work in multiple areas of architecture, interior architecture, and landscape design, as well as an avid art practice. In 2003 she founded the multidisciplinary firm InsideOut Design, in Oakland, California, with partner and Landscape Architect Penn Phillips, and became LEED accredited. From 1998 until 2017 she served as adjunct faculty at California College of the Arts, teaching architecture, interior architecture, and industrial design. Fecskés Phillips is a practicing visual artist in Oakland and is working as an artist and architect on public sculptures and memorial projects. She is currently a board member at the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts, and facilitates workshops on artistic inspiration, as she is keenly interested in multiple sources and forms of creative endeavor and practice. She is a mother of two, plus a Border Collie and a Great Dane.
