2011 UK Award Part 2
Zeitgeist Archive, Berlin

“Zeitgeist Archive, Berlin” is the final project carried out by Steven Kok, Sean Peel, and Hannah Wilson for their MArch degree. As longstanding collaborators, the topics covered in the final project allowed the three to each contribute to areas of interest developed in their individual dissertations. Describing the final project as a “fascinating journey,” through the participation of a city’s inhabitants and the collection of objects they leave behind, the ever-changing story of Berlin can be “traced and interpreted” by the viewer leading to infinite differing versions of the city, each one unique, giving insight into the life of the city: the zeitgeist of Berlin.

If methods of representation are always inferior to the original idea itself, can retrospective values ever be recaptured? This difference between what is implied and what we infer harbors results that create alternative fictions and also potential sources of contention.

Museum Island and the Kulturforum represent microcosms of Berlin’s unique condition of duplicated spaces; two Berlins each with their own architectural language, a consequence of the division the Wall imposed.

If we acquiesce that architectural composition is constituted from a canon of predetermined elemental possibilities, their manipulation, as representational forms, becomes one of preference of the zeitgeist. Since reunification, some citizens want a new identity embodied within a new architecture, while some favor the rebuilding of the lost; a key example of this is the proposed recreation of the Berliner Stadtschloss. However, is this attempt to recapture a lost epoch and its set of values achievable?

In order to investigate these questions, one million safety storage boxes would be issued to the citizens of Berlin. Each box, the volume of a person, is obtained at birth and allows the individual to deposit objects throughout their lifetime. In doing so the self is projected onto the objects, transforming them into semiotic signs that trace human lives. The perceived value of each object continuously alters as a consequence of the ever-changing epoch. The collection of objects can be mapped and interpreted over time, giving an insight into the lives of individuals and the life of the city: the zeitgeist of Berlin.

Thus, the architecture created acts as a vessel in which a sequence of speculative events can occur; a framework whose scale and density is composed by the participation of the city’s inhabitants. A series of celebrated journeys are expressed through a sequence of mechanized events, the spectacle of which spills over, back into the motion of human life. Helping to map the alteration of semantic values instilled within objects by their proprietors and their subsequent morphology over time, this project investigates whether original values can ever be recaptured.

Steven Kok

plans to utilize his award to pursue the themes of Zeitgeist Archive. He will develop an online portfolio as base to test and publish the concepts founded in the scheme. This has recently led to a first commission, and with similar opportunities, Kok aspires to ultimately set up his own design studio in the near future.

Sean Peel

is currently working on projects all over the world as an architectural assistant at the firm of Benoy, in Newark, where he hopes to complete his RIBA part 3 qualification and continue his progression toward qualification as an architect.

Hannah Wilson

plans to use her fellowship to fulfill her ambition of visiting Venice for the 2012 Biennale Architectura, returning via Modena and Verona to enjoy the architecture and culture of those cities. Wilson has moved back to Northumberland where she is presently involved in a range of heritage and conservation projects to develop an understanding of the traditional craft of construction. Her future aspirations are to work in a European city to build on a diverse range of experience to forge a successful career in architecture.
