I propose to study how the reconfiguration of the landscape, the urban fabric, and the architecture of the city have occurred over time. By reconfiguration, I mean the necessary synthesis between the structure of the existing city fabric of “things” and the introduced qualities of a new object. The landscape, urban fabric, and the architecture are components of the city. They are interdependent, but they also exist as separate entities.
I propose to study the character of the landscape and the composition of the city first as description and then as a series of larger metaphors. I will then consider a specific building, or specific opposition between building, for each city, which established a synecdochical relationship between the building and the architecture of the city, promoting an interpretation of the city through its constituent parts.
