SOM Foundation Announces Jury and Applications Open for the 2026 European Research Prize

The SOM Foundation is pleased to announce the jury for the 2026 European Research Prize. This year’s jury will be led by SOM Foundation Executive Director Peter MacKeith and will include Antti Ahlava (Professor of Emergent Design Methodologies, Aalto University, Helsinki), Kent Jackson (Design Partner, SOM, London), and Andrew Waugh (Director, Waugh Thistleton Architects, London).

The SOM Foundation introduced the European Research Prize in 2021 as an expansion of the US-based Research Prize. Each year, one €20,000 prize is awarded to a faculty-led interdisciplinary team based in Europe to conduct original research on the Foundation’s annual topic. Five projects have received the prize so far. Recent teams have studied the regeneration of housing estates in Barcelona, nature-based solutions for wetland water security, and mobility infrastructure across the Adriatic.

This year’s topic, “AI, the Built Environment, and Human Agency,” asks how artificial intelligence is changing the design, construction, and management of buildings and cities, and where human agency in design still matters. The jurors come to that question from architectural education and urban design, low-carbon timber construction, and design practice at SOM’s London office.

Applications are due Monday, December 21, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. CST. The winner will be notified no later than Monday, February 22, 2027. The full brief is available on the European Research Prize application page.
