SOM Foundation Announces the 2026–2027 Framework

This topical framework aims to explore how artificial intelligence is transforming the built environment across scales. From the design and construction of buildings to the management of infrastructure, public space, and urban services, these data-driven technologies are reshaping architectural design and how cities evolve.

As machine intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in the physical world, what new spatial, social, and environmental conditions will emerge? In an increasingly data-driven world, what are the new and necessary opportunities for human agency in design? Ultimately, how should architects, engineers, and planners respond to ensure these transformations contribute to more equitable, resilient, and human-centered futures?

This year's jury will be led by SOM Foundation Executive Director Peter MacKeith. The complete jury, consisting of leading voices in practice, academia, and industry, will be announced shortly.

The call for applications to the Research Prize, European Research Prize, and Robert L. Wesley Award will open in September 2026. The call for applications to the Structural Engineering Fellowship and China Fellowship will open in January 2027. The call for applications to the Researcher-in-Residence will open in February 2027.
