SOM Foundation Launches Search for Executive Director

The SOM Foundation is launching the search for its next Executive Director, as Iker Gil prepares to step down after seven years in the role.

In collaboration with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will provide strategic and visionary leadership and will be responsible for advancing the mission of the SOM Foundation. The Executive Director will set priorities to advance and amplify the impact of its core awards program, operations, and long-term financial security.

Background

Founded in 1979, the SOM Foundation’s goal is to advance the design profession’s ability to address the key topics of our time by bringing together and supporting groups and individuals, each with the highest possible design aspirations. The Foundation’s award programming was established in 1981 and currently offers seven annual awards across the United States, Europe, and China. The awards support students and faculty of architecture, landscape architecture, interior architecture, urban design, and engineering to undertake rigorous interdisciplinary research that can help shape our future.

Key Responsibilities


  • Advance the mission of the SOM Foundation in partnership with the Board of Directors, including programmatic, operational, and financial strategy.
  • Oversee an expansive program of awards, exhibitions, and public events, including the William F. Baker International Research and Design Forum.
  • Direct and coordinate with SOM Foundation fellows as they prepare for, develop, and present their work.
  • Identify opportunities to expand the impact of the SOM Foundation through the development of new initiatives and strengthening of existing partnerships.
  • Direct and oversee the successful recruitment, jury, and implementation of annual student and early-career awards and researcher-in-residence programs, including building relationships with academic institutions.
  • Manage the Foundation’s administration and operations, including awards disbursement, fundraising, fellow, and donor database management.
  • Oversee all marketing and public relations activities, including the newsletter, website, digital archive, and social media, while also managing access to and the continued stewardship of the Foundation’s online and physical archives.
  • Formally represent the SOM Foundation in all instances required by the position, as well as those delegated by the board.
  • Provide monthly updates to the SOM Foundation Board of Directors on the awards and event implementation, financial health, and opportunities for growth.

Qualifications and Experience


  • Proven experience working in nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, and/or design related fields. Experience with international organizations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of and connections with academia, industry partners, and community organizations in architecture or design.
  • Interest in promoting interdisciplinary research.
  • Strong organizational, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Understanding of and commitment to fundraising, financial reporting, and nonprofit operations.
